Doctoral Degree

Doctoral Degree - In today's competitive world, it is usually considered a given that a person will attend college and earn a bachelor's degree. And it is becoming more and more common for a student to continue on to graduate school, or even return after several years of working in order to earn advanced degrees like a Master's or Doctoral degree. A bachelor's degree used to be enough to make a person marketable in any given field, with the possible exception of medicine or law. Today, though, more people are finding that they just can't excel in their chosen professions without the benefit of the supplementary and specific knowledge that is gained while attending graduate school and earning either a Master's degree or a doctoral degree. There are several key factors in deciding whether to attend graduate school, and they all must be carefully assessed.

Graduate school requires a lot of time and a lot of money, not to mention a substantial commitment on the part of the student. Graduate school is much more intensive than undergraduate studies, and the work gets much more concentrated and demanding as a student traverses through a Master's degree program and into a doctoral degree program. The payoff, however, can be enormous on many levels. There is a certain esteem that comes with holding advanced degrees, and there is certainly the potential to earn more money, as well as the advancement potential in a particular field. But the student must be aware of the commitments involved, and be willing to make the sacrifices it takes to successfully achieve these levels of academic standing. That is why a student really needs to stop and consider why he or she should go to graduate school.

It is important to consider the idea that not all career paths require a graduate degree for certain levels of achievement. For example, a degree in a field such as Engineering does not require a Master's or doctoral degree for many job levels within the fields that exist to work in. While an advanced degree in Engineering is valuable for research purposes, it does not necessarily garner a higher wage or position out in the workforce. However, there is overwhelming evidence that suggests that those that hold Master's or doctoral degrees do tend to earn higher salaries in most fields. And holding a Master's or doctoral degree will also make a person more marketable when it comes time for the job search.

Another issue to consider is timing. When should a person go to graduate school? While many decide to go on immediately after receiving a Bachelor's degree, many also decide to gain work experience and return years later. The decision is all dependent upon individual circumstances, and there are advantages either way. When a student decides to head straight for graduate school, he or she is still in the "student" mindset, used to studying, memorizing, etc. Also, there are usually fewer personal obligations for a younger graduate student; there are likely no families to support or full time jobs to juggle with school. However, for the older graduate student, it is often beneficial to have several years of work experience when the decision is made to return to school to earn a Master's or Doctoral degree. An experienced student knows where he or she wants to head in a particular field after working in it - or if he or she wants to changes career courses and earn a different type of degree altogether. As a more mature student, he or she is often more focused on the work to be done, and better able to multitask. In addition, there are some graduate programs that actually require work experience as a prerequisite of admission into the program. Another benefit of returning to graduate school later is that many employers often pay for tuition, which is a huge financial load off a student's back.

The decision of whether to go to graduate school in order to earn a Master's degree or doctoral degree should not be taken lightly. It is expensive, time consuming, and requires a great commitment. But having possession of an advanced degree can provide a person with a wealth of professional opportunities, as well as give him or her the ability to conduct research on a particular topic in a field that can make real differences in our culture and society. The prestige of having an advanced academic or professional degree demonstrates to colleagues and others a certain level of commitment to a field, and the hard work carried out in order to exhibit a person's expertise and devotion to an idea.
